Dr. Parfitt, originally from Columbia, S.C., finished his Bachelor’s degree in Physics at the Citadel in 1976. In 1980, he finished the coursework for Ph.D. in Physics at The University of South Carolina. He then transferred to Southern College of Optometry where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and his doctorate in Optometry in 1984, graduating 23 out of a class of 140. Dr. Parfitt co-founded Eye Associates, P.A. in 1986 and has been in continuous practice in Anderson, S.C. ever since. In 1994, he served as Secretary and Treasurer of the South Carolina Optometric Association (SCOA), rising to President in 1997. After serving two years as Trustee to the Southeastern Conference on Optometry, the largest optometric educational organization in the world, he served on the Board of Examiners in Optometry from 2000 to 2006-the last three as president. In 1993, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the SCOA for legislative efforts to expand scope of practice, and again in 1998 for legislative efforts in insurance reform. In 2004, the South Carolina Optometric Association chose him as Optometrist of the year. Since 1984, he has been a member of the Piedmont Optometric Society, the South Carolina Optometric Physicians Association (formerly the SCOA), and the American Optometric Association. In his spare time, Dr. Parfitt enjoys hunting and restoring old British automobiles. His favorite color is blue.
Dr. Alexander Ward was born and raised in Rock Hill, SC. He attended the College of Charleston and graduated with a B.Sc in Biology, minoring in Spanish. Upon receiving his Doctorate of Optometry from the InterAmerican University of Puerto Rico, he was accepted to the prestigious ocular disease residency at the Omni Eye Services of Atlanta. After leaving Atlanta, Dr. Ward practiced a few years with Family Vision in Anderson, SC. He partnered with Dr. Mak and founded Carolina Eye Care in 2010. Dr. Ward specializes in the treatment and management of ocular diseases, and co-management of LASIK and cataract surgeries. Dr. Ward served as president and vice-president of the Piedmont Optometric Association in the past. He is a member of the American Optometric Association, South Carolina Optometric Physicians Association, and the Piedmont Optometric Association. In his spare time, Dr. Ward enjoys camping, swimming, spending time with his family, and working on old British cars.
Dr. Karen Mak received her B.Sc. degree in Cell & Molecular Biology and M.Sc. degree in Cell Biology at the University of Calgary in Canada. She earned her Doctor of Optometry degree at the InterAmerican University of Puerto Rico, where she graduated magna cum laude. Dr. Mak began her optometric externships at the Indiana University School of Optometry Eye Care Center in Guanajuato, Mexico, where she provided care for under-served communities. Her externship at Omni Eye Services in Atlanta provided her confidence in the diagnosis and management of ocular diseases, as well as the co-management of cataract and LASIK pre-operative and post-operative care. After graduation, Dr. Mak practiced primary eye care in Atlanta, Greenville, and Anderson. Dr. Mak served as president and vice-president of the Piedmont Optometric Association. She is a member of the American Optometric Association, South Carolina Optometric Physicians Association, and the Piedmont Optometric Association. During Dr. Mak’s free time, she enjoys traveling, spending time on the lake, and staying busy with her family.
